In the foothils of the Annapuranas to the west of Pokhara there are four excellent lodges, five hours walk apart, built and managed by Ker & Downey. Located on the fringe of small hill villages each lodge is built in the traditional Nepali style, has eight to 10 rooms, and is surrounded by pretty gardens.

Often called ‘luxury’ lodges, they are actually relatively simple, but with their high standards of maintenance and service, and en-suite bathrooms with hot water they are certainly luxurious in this remote part of the world. Three course set evening meals are served at the communal dining table after drinks and appetisers around the fire, or on the terrace.  Down jackets, wool gloves and hats are provided in each of the rooms.

The lodges operate as ecologically as possible. Food is prepared using gas, electricity for low level lighting is supplied by generator and hot water is provided by solar energy. The wood that is burnt for fires is driftwood. Local school children might give a short cultural performance and funds raised from these go directly to the school or communal village projects.

Ker & Downey bases its entire Nepal operation on the strict principles and traditions of the Gurkhas and they are a central part of their team. Together with locally recruited Sherpa porters and lodge staff, guests are assured a level of service and care essential to a safe yet exciting adventure.

The Annapurna Himalaya

Nepal is situated in the central region of the Greater Himalaya and it contains more of the world’s highest mountains than any other country. The range is broken into groups of massifs divided by glaciers and rivers draining down from the Tibetan plateau. To the north of Pokhara the Annapurna Himal has nine peaks over 7000m (22 965ft) and is dominated by Annapurna 1 at 8091m (26 545ft). Read more?
