Comfortable small lodge with its own small game sanctuary

Guide Price: From: $125 To: $235

Mount Meru Game Lodge was established in 1959 by Dr Andrea Von Nagy and is located in a beautiful setting, beside several age old mango trees, with an adjoining sanctuary. A large converted farmhouse, full of archways leading into different areas of the interior - the lodge is now leased & managed by Mark Lawson and team.

The decor is simple and somewhat random giving the impression that bits and pieces have simply been added over the years without too much thought to the overall interior design. All the bedrooms vary in size and decoration and many have recently been decorated. The accommodation at the back has river views and is generally more private, whereas the other rooms towards the front have less privacy but nice views directly onto the pond and sanctuary area beyond it.

The food is good with great attention to detail which is served in what must once have been a grand dining room, looking out over the extensive lawns and gardens. There is a lovely shaded terrace at the front for both drinks and dining on fine days. Thankfully most of the sanctuary residents have moved on now and all that remains is an assortment of plains game with the odd ostrich and warthog, all of whom seem very happy with the easy life they lead in the open sanctuary area.

Good fun for kids, particularly at the start of a safari and with the attention to detail of the current management we consider this a good alternative for any overnight stay in Arusha.

Arusha Outskirts

On the road that runs between Moshi and Arusha, there are numerous small, but growing, ribbon developments; Maji ya Chai, Usa River, Tengeru to name but a few.  Within 20 miles or so of Arusha, the land to the north of the road rises up steeply into the fertile, banana clad foothills of Mt Meru, while to the south, the land rapidly gives way to the dry and increasingly barren plains that form the edge of the Maasai Steppe.  Secreted amongst these scattered villages lie quite a number of small hotels that we recommend as places to spend a night or so catching up after the joy of your international flight, and before you head off on safari.  While we wouldn't go so far as saying that this area is somewhere to visit in its own right (having lived here for quite a number of years) it's very well placed for accessing both the two airports that service this part of the country (Kilimanjaro and Arusha) and the major parks in Northern Tanzania.  At certain times of year, you'll also be treated to stunning, and often quite unexpected, views of both Mt Meru (15,000ft) and Mt Kilimanjaro (19,000ft). Tanzania

Tanzania safaris rival a safari any other country in Africa in terms of sheer wilderness, formidable landscapes and volume of wildlife.  At Natural High, we have travelled all over the country, worked in some of its best Tanzania safari camps and lodges and flown all over as bush pilots so we feel qualified to venture such opinions.
