Bagamoyo, 45 miles north of Dar Es Salaam and a stone's throw from Zanzibar is largely overlooked these days

Bagamoyo, 45 miles north of Dar Es Salaam and a stone's throw from Zanzibar is largely overlooked these days. It's dusty, unsophisticated and undeveloped. All of this belies the very significant part that Bagomoyo played in the history of this part of the coast in the past few hundred years. Bagomoyo was at the epicentre of the slave trade, being where slaves were brought when they reached the coast after trekking, often chained together, for hundreds of miles from the hinterland . On arrival at Bagomoyo, they would be held at the Caravanserai, before continuing their miserable journeys either to Zanzibar, Oman or beyond.
