Dar es Salaam is a large, industrial and, in all honesty, mostly uninspiring city. People never tire of telling you that the name means "haven of peace", but nowadays, as you fight your way through the traffic, this just sounds like a bad joke.  Of course it's unfair to deny that Dar does have something of its own unmistakable character, so if you're spending a night here out of necessity there's enough here to be of interest and, on the positive side, these days there are also some great little boutique hotels springing up, which mean that you can stay in real comfort and eat extremely well. Unlike the old days when dinner and enjoying the view of a city-wide power cut from the roof terrace of the then Kilimanjaro Hotel was as good as it got...
