Chimping in the forest and fishing in the lake

Guide Price: From: $280 To: $465

Kungwe Beach Lodge is on the edge of Lake Tanganyika and has 10 walk-in tented bandas with thatched roofs on raised wooden platforms, set back on the edge of the forest on the beach. The camp is exists on solar power and lamps, so there is no disturbance from churning generators.

Overall this camp is clean and comfortable but there is little wow factor. However, if you have budget restraints, then this is a good, cheaper option to Greystoke. Chimpanzee tracking is the main reason why people visit this camp and the treks usually begin early in the morning and can be anything from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Since trekking the chimps is restricted you may find yourselves with time on your hands and a great way to spend it is either swimming in the crystal clear lake or climbing to see the Kakombe and Mkenke Waterfalls which are about 30 minutes from the camp.

Mahale National Park

The Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania are the ultimate location for a chimpanzee safari. The park is home to a large group of chimps habituated and studied since the 60s by the Universtity of Kyoto.  Chimps aside, Mahale is also one of the most remote and scenically breathtaking areas in East Africa with mountains, forest and the crystal clear water of Lake Tanganyika combining to give this part of Tanzania a feeling unlike any other part of the country.
