Game drives in Manyara and some walking opportunities

Guide Price: From: $375 To: $465

E Unoto Retreat is a comfortable hotel with a pool, in an attractive location within easy reach of Lake Manyara National Park at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. It is a drive of around 2 hrs from Arusha and about 20 minutes from the gate at Lake Manyara, so it's a good place to stay on the way from Arusha to Ngorongoro Highlands or the Serengeti National Park.

The camp is set in a stunning location right at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment wall which towers up over 1500 ft just to the west. To the East there are views over the rift valley to the dormant volcano Lossimingor and on clear days Mt Meru is just visible in the distance.

There are around 30 large rondavel style rooms, with small verandas to the front, and hot and cold running water. The camp has probably got the most comfortable beds in east Africa and each room has two double beds in it. There is a small swimming pool set on a ledge over looking papyrus swamps and a small freshwater lake fed by waterfalls directly from the edge of the rift.

This is a peaceful and comfortable camp to spend a night en route between a safari in Manyara and the Serengeti National Park or Ngorongoro and the pool is a welcome sight if you have been driving for an hour or two on dusty roads. The crew is entirely Maasai, coming from a local village and this is a camp that works closely with the local communities and produces valuable revenue for them.

Manyara Escarpment

50 miles or so west of Arusha, at the northern end of Lake Manyara, you reach the edge of the Great Rift Valley that runs the length of the continent. This is a geological feature on a major scale; a virtual cliff that rises up some 1000ft out of the floor of the rift valley.  A number of the lodges close to Lake Manyara are located close to edge of the Escarpment and consequently have truly spectacular views, either of Lake Manyara itself or of Lossimigor Volcano (dormant) and the surrounding landscape. This is one of the few places you are likely to see eagles and vultures soaring below you which makes a change. Read more?
