Game drives in Manyara, walks and village visits

Guide Price: From: $345 To: $660

Kirurumu is a tented safari lodge with stunning views, a short distance from Lake Manyara National Park. Walks and visits to the local villages or Mto wa Mbu, the thriving village at the base of the Manyara escarpment and mountain biking are on offer as well as game drives in the Park. Kirurumu is built right on the edge of the Great Rift Valley a drive of about twenty minutes from the park gate.

With its spectacular setting two thousand feet above the Rift Valley floor, the views from Kirurumu are breathtaking. Just to the east is the extinct volcano, Lossimingor, which rises to around 8000ft above sea level and the views of this are great as the light changes throughout the day.

Kirurumu is a small, quite laid back camp with an unpretentious feel. Its certainly not grand but it all works, the tents are comfortable and clean, the food is simple but good and the views really are worthwhile. Its real value is probably in its location - usefully en route between Arusha or Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Highlands or beyond to the Serengeti.

Its not the sort of place you'll want to spend too long, maybe two nights max but sometimes even one does the trick, in that it allows a less rushed visit to Manyara National Park. Kirurumu offers a range of activities, which aren't available in national parks and that in themselves make this a place worth staying. Cycling on mountain bikes down to the eastern edge of Lake Manyara and walks from camp can easily be arranged, as can canoeing on Lake Manyara with a little bit more warning.

Manyara Escarpment

50 miles or so west of Arusha, at the northern end of Lake Manyara, you reach the edge of the Great Rift Valley that runs the length of the continent. This is a geological feature on a major scale; a virtual cliff that rises up some 1000ft out of the floor of the rift valley.  A number of the lodges close to Lake Manyara are located close to edge of the Escarpment and consequently have truly spectacular views, either of Lake Manyara itself or of Lossimigor Volcano (dormant) and the surrounding landscape. This is one of the few places you are likely to see eagles and vultures soaring below you which makes a change. Read more?
