Great views of the Crater with easy access for game drives

Guide Price: From: $295 To: $435

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge can't be described as one of the more inspiring lodges on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, although from the point of view of access to the Crater floor, this is definitely one of the best located.

It more or less has its own access road on the eastern crater rim and is well worth considering for this reason alone. Its a large lodge, but with comfortable rooms and great views. It is perfectly comfortable although you will be rubbing shoulders with an extraordinary number of package tourists.

Don't hold out for a gourmet experience here but Sopa lodge will suit you fine if quick and easy access to the Crater is what's important to you - and you are prepared for the contrast between this and the rest of your safari.

With 96 comfortable rooms all with ensuite bathrooms (with baths not just showers) and central heating for the really cold months, there is a vast central dining area and a bar where the static from the velour upholstery virtually makes your hair stand on end. Strange as it may seem it really is worth serious consideration, just as long as you go there with your eyes wide open - or not if you're very sensitive about interior design.

Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Unique is a thoroughly overused word, but it really does apply to the Ngorongoro Crater. This is the largest unbroken caldera in the world - and it's full of big wild animals. The difficulty here is remembering that what you're looking at isn't artificial. And this becomes harder when you realise the only thing to rival the animal population in Ngorongoro is the tourist population...and for this you must be prepared.  On a bad day you'll can find yourself persued by minibuses full of camera-toting tourists each time you stop.  It's probably harsh to suggest that you should miss the Crater out altogether on account of the traffic jams, but our advice would be plan to leave wishing you'd stayed longer, rather than the other way round. Tanzania

Tanzania safaris rival a safari any other country in Africa in terms of sheer wilderness, formidable landscapes and volume of wildlife.  At Natural High, we have travelled all over the country, worked in some of its best Tanzania safari camps and lodges and flown all over as bush pilots so we feel qualified to venture such opinions.
