Sprawling beach 'lodge', Nice pool. Good place to relax

Guide Price: From: $250 To: $350

Ras Kutani is one of the better beach hotels in Tanzania and Zanzibar. It sits on a deserted beach about 35 km south of Dar es Salaam and is a wonderful place to relax and have a lazy and indulgent few days unwinding after a safari. It's also close enough to Dar es Salaam to be an excellent alternative for a last night before catching an international flight - the transfer by air takes around 15 minutes.

The Hotel is built with its back to thick forest, inhabited by galagos and colobus monkeys as well as numerous bird species; it's front is facing the sea.  On one side it overlooks a freshwater lagoon. There are only 9 cottages, some of which are right on the waterfront and others face the lagoon.  4 suites are built up the side of a small hill and each have their own plunge pool which is needed if you have dodgy knees these rooms are a bit of a challenge to get to (or get down from!)   There is also a family room with 2 cottages joined with a central sitting area.   All the cottages are designed on the “space-is-luxuryÇ?? concept so there really is plenty of room to spread yourself around.   The build is of thatch and woven palm matting, with a large verandah and hammock out in the front and a spacious en suite bathroom behind.

The main sitting area and bar is filled with huge cushions and is generally conducive to doing very little apart from eating and drinking far too much. The only down side of Ras Kutani applies to any one looking to dive or snorkel- there is no diving from here and you really need to look at places like {Matemwe Bungalows} or {Ras Nungwi} on Zanzibar for this. The only water sports available are Kyaking which you can do on the lagoon or if you book well in advance, Kite surfing.

Ras Kutani Beach

Ras Kutani is a short distance south of Dar es Salaam. This is somewhere it's seriously worth considering if Zanzibar doesn't appeal or sounds a bit too busy. As a beach location, Zanzibar is always difficult to compete with, but that does also mean that this part of the coast is quiet and relatively little visited. If you're after a place to just relax, enjoy a bit of swimming and views of the sea, then there are one or two great places to look at in this area. Read more?

Tanzania

Tanzania safaris rival a safari any other country in Africa in terms of sheer wilderness, formidable landscapes and volume of wildlife.  At Natural High, we have travelled all over the country, worked in some of its best Tanzania safari camps and lodges and flown all over as bush pilots so we feel qualified to venture such opinions.
