Tent With A View was one of the first camps to establish itself in Saadani Game Reserve. Owner David Guthrie made a brave move in settling here at a time when Saadani was virtually unknown and had only recently been gazetted. Saadani wasn't - and still isn't - a place you come just to tick off large animals, but it is somewhere with considerable appeal that will suit those who are intrigued by this unusual mix of beach and bush.

Of course this is no luxury lodge, the whole focus is about the setting and the outside, but it's far from uncomfortable and it isn't short on charm. The tented bandas on all built on stilts, right on the beach in amongst coconut groves. Each banda is a very good size, open, airy and immaculately clean. All the rooms are furnished with an individual theme and each has an ensuite bathroom made out of reed and thatching. To the front there are large balconies with hammocks overlooking the Indian Ocean. If the idea of something a little different piques your interest then this camp is well worth a visit.

Sadaani Reserve

Saadani National Park is relatively small at just 1000sq km, but it's highly unusual in Tanzania, in that it lies right on the coast. Sadaani is somewhere there's a real possibility you could see elephant and other mammals on the beach (not your normal beach holiday then). It's situated between Dar es Salaam and Tanga and its principal features are the beach and the Wami River, which winds its way in a series of story book meanders to meet the Indian Ocean just a short distance north of Dar es Salaam. Saadani is Tanzania's newest national park and you wouldn't want to come here expecting the concentrations of animals you get in some of Tanzania's National Parks and equally, it probably isn't the best beach in East Africa. However, Saadani is undoubtedly inherently fascinating and will really appeal to those interested in seeing an unusual pocket of Tanzania. Read more?
