Suyan Camp is a semi-permanent luxury camp that is only open between mid December and end of March. Situated in the eastern area of the Piaya village concession, its set in beautiful rolling hills, popular with the maasai with distant views over the village itself.

The camp has just six large 'mobile' tents all with ensuite bathrooms, with safari showers & toilets. Its a classic safari camp, perfectly comfortable but nothing very fancy, with a centralised tented bar / dining area where everyone gathers and a central fireplace as the evening focal point.

This area has a wonderfully remote feel to it and comes into its own from late December when the wildebeest often spill out of the Serengeti to graze the open plains in this area. Gol Mountains is within easy reach so visits to Nasera Rock and Angat Kiti are possible as are walks in the area, including to the dramatic Sanjan Gorge which cuts through the hills to Salei Plain just east of the escarpment overlooking Lake Natron.

The area is good for cheetah and even wild dog which have been quietly increasing in numbers around here over the past 3-4 years. Lion are very much about but are shy, on account of the amount of Maasai activity, which increases as you get farther east away from the Serengeti boundary.

Loliondo

Loliondo could perhaps be described as the Serengeti with fewer rules, offering as it does excellent walking safaris, night drives and for much of the year rewarding game viewing. Spanning the entire eastern edge of the Serengeti National Park, it's a critical part of the whole ecosystem - yet visited by remarkably few tourists.  Loliondo is actually a huge Maasai community area but in our opinion is worth treating as a separate park because the range of safari activities on offer here is significantly greater than those within the Serengeti National Park boundaries. For much of the year, you'll find that we recommend that you divide your stay in both the Serengeti and Loliondo, staying at camps like Nomad's Nduara Loliondo. The intention here is that you get to see the wildebeest migration whilst also experiencing the wilder side of this stunning area. Read more?

Tanzania safaris rival a safari any other country in Africa in terms of sheer wilderness, formidable landscapes and volume of wildlife.  At Natural High, we have travelled all over the country, worked in some of its best Tanzania safari camps and lodges and flown all over as bush pilots so we feel qualified to venture such opinions.
