Olduvai Camp lies just off the main road that connects {Ngorongoro Crater} and highlands with the Serengeti National Park.  Its location makes it a convenent place to spend the night after visiting the Crater and before continuing into the Serengeti, but this area does need to carry a health warning on account of the spectacular amount of dust at all but the greenest times of year.

The camp which is simple is built around a granite kopje, from the top of which you get stunning views of the surrounding plains and the highlands themselves.  While Olduvai can be a very good location when the wildebeest migration is in its southern range (Jan - April), the location is extremely dry and dusty any time between May and when the rains come in January.

The location of Olduvai in relation to a safari in Northern Tanzania A better location is Ndutu, which is set in mature acacia woodland and offers a far more diverse habitat of woodland, springs, soda lakes and, of course, the same plains that are accessible from Olduvai.

The camp itself is unremarkable, with fairly small walk in tents with bathrooms to the rear.

Serengeti National Park - the Southern Plains

This area is dominated by the vast and seemingly endless short grass plains, stretching southwards from Naabi Hill farther than the eye can see - towards the extinct volcanoes of the Ngorongoro Highlands directly south, the Maswa woodlands in the south west and the dramatic Gol Mountains and open plains of Loliondo to the south east and east respectively. The southern plains are at their best between mid December and late May when this whole area comes alive as millions of wildebeest move onto the plains in search of the fresh green grass after the first rains.
