Kirawira Tented Camp

Serengeti National Park - the Western Corridor, Tanzania

Game drives in western corridor, ballooning, limited walks

Guide Price: From: $495 To: $695

Kirawira belongs to the Serena group of Hotels, and is built on the top of a hill with wonderful commanding views to the north over the Ndabaka plains and to the west towards the shores of Lake Victoria, which is visible in the distance on a clear day.

The camp describes itself as the reincarnation of an elegant Victorian outpost. However, this is slightly removed from the reality. This is a 25-room hotel in tents. Every thing works well, but it has a sterile feel and lacks the intimacy or character of the small privately owned camps.

The staff are friendly and proficient and the food is fine, but this place has the unmistakeable stamp of a chain property, most used to dealing with large tour groups. The tents are large and comfortable and set on platforms with shady verandas in front, there is an ensuite bathroom at the back with a very powerful hot shower and a flush loo.

The camp has a swimming pool. More of a comfortable motel in the bush - this is a place to spend up to a couple of nights to catch the migration as it heads through the western corridor in July.

Also worth mentioning that camps and game drives in this area can suffer from occasional tsetse issues. This varies hugely and in our opinion is definitely not a reason to miss out either the area or the camp, but we think it's helpful to flag up the issue and do ask us for any latest updates if you're concerned.

Serengeti National Park - the Western Corridor

The Western Corridor is the hotspot in late June and July as the wildebeest migration rolls into town, but it also retains a sizeable resident population of wildebeest - and good general game viewing - year round. This is a funnel shaped piece of land running from the Central Serengeti west to the park boundary near the shore of Lake Victoria. It's an interesting and beautiful area, particularly when you leave the main road - and the Peugot 504 taxis - behind. Read more?
