Like most African cities, Kampala is a colourful, messy, noisy and bustling place

Like most African cities, Kampala is a colourful, messy, noisy and bustling place.  Traffic is chaotic, not least because of the lack of discernable street signs, and more probably due to the slightly manic driving.  Built amongst seven hills, the city is a mixture of slightly scruffy downtown and greener suburbs.  There is not a great deal to do here but there are a few good hotels so it's not a bad place in which to find yourself for a night either end of your safari, especially if you enjoy a taste of the "real Africa".
