Comfortable, big, many restaurants, large pool

The Aga Khan’s chain of Serena Hotels are found in several African countries and they are generally solid and dependable choices.  Each is designed differently and often reflects the character of its surroundings (though not always).

The Kampala Serena is rather large and glitzy, with extensive grounds and ambitious architecture, apparently drawing its inspiration from the abundance of Uganda’s lakes and rivers.  It resembles a sort of north-African/Sun City sort of thing...all matt terracotta walls and sculpted water-features. The rooms are sizeable, air-conditioned and comfortable.

There is a choice of restaurants, from a brasserie that serves light meals throughout the day, to a fine-dining restaurant and a pool terrace cafe and bar.  There are certainly worse places to while away any time you might have in Kampala but don't expect cosy informality or rustic chic here...this is a proper hotel in every sense of the word.

Uganda

Uganda is a beguiling mixture of what the rest of Africa has to offer, from the semi-desert country of Karamoja, to the snow-capped mountains of the Rwenzoris and the "impenetrable" rainforests of Bwindi.  Uganda is lush, green and luxuriant, full of tropical exuberance and lots of banana trees.
