Shumba Bush Camp is one of the two Wilderness Safaris high end luxury Zambian camps. It is located in the Busunga Plains lying in the north of the Kafue National Park; a massive flat area which stretches far and wide and also happens to be one of Zambia's most significant wetland resources. The camp is built entirely on stilts to protect it from the floodwater and as a result, the structures stand high enough off the ground affording far reaching views of the Busunga Plains in front.

Shumba Camp comprises six spacious luxury safari tents on raised platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains.  Overall it is very spacious and open, with lots of dark polished teak decking and pristine furnishings which are a stark contrast to the rather 'shaggy dog look style' of the thatching. Due to being elevated, the lodge is blissfully breezy, however sometimes too breezy and as a result the main area has glass doors which are usually open wide, but are a welcome relief if the wind picks up. A large focus at the camp is to involve you in the safari way of life and many of the meals are prepared and cooked in front of you.

This camp is perfectly situated to take advantage of the plains game and predator concentrations of the Busanga Plains, being situated as it is within close proximity to permanent water and having easy access to a mix of seasonal and permanent floodplains. Shumba is named after a favourite species in the area - prides of lion sometimes up to 20 strong! Viewing of species like puku, lechwe and hippo is possible for much of the day from the comfort of your tent or the main deck, while the camp's fig trees ensure both shade and constant bird activity in the canopy above.

Kafue National Park

Kafue is Zambia's oldest park and, at 22,400 square kilometres, it's one of the larger national park in Africa. The park is supplied by 3 rivers, namely the Kafue, Lunga and the Lufupa and the Busanga Swamp is one of Zambia's most prominent wetland resources.  The surrounding Busanga Plains are partially flooded during the rains but are left rich and lush when the water recedes from around May, attracting great numbers of herbivores.  Along with many other species, this area is home to thousands of red lechwe which in turn attract the many lion, leopard and even cheetah to the area.
