Game drives, night drives, canoe safaris, boat trips, fishing.

The Lower Zambezi has become slightly synonymous with luxury and is well served by a number of very indulgent camps. Ol Mondoro is a welcome reality check and brings the focus of the safari experience back to the bush. Still very much a simple bushcamp, the four reed and thatch rooms manage to make the most of being part of the bush while remaining comfortable and convenient. That wonderful invention, the day-bed, is present on every verandah and is the best spot to while away siesta time. You can enjoy a sunken bath or a shower under the stars as nightjars and bats swoop overhead, listening to the night noises.

Around the camp, the birdlife is prolific so spending a morning wondering round camp with a cup of coffee in one hand and binoculars in another is just as rewarding as the walks around the very scenic local area.  This used to be part of the Zambezi floodplain and now makes for the best type of walking country; relatively open with beautiful trees and lovely views to the escarpment.

Ol Mondoro is in a game rich area where it is one of only a couple of camps.  Big herds of buffalo can be seen on the Jeki Plains and elephant often cross the river immediately in front of camp.  Leopard sightings are frequent, as are lion.  Whether out on a game drive or a bush walk, or cruising the river, it is unlikely that you will be disappointed here.

The camp is well suited for people who enjoy the bush without the fanfare.  Its simplicity is what makes it, along with the great all round wildlife experience.

All those wonderful moments,,, from the early morning porridge bubbling on the fire, the animal sightings to mention some, from Wart Hogs to Civets, PuKus to Elans, Lions Leopards Giraffes, Elephants Zebras, mongoose, jackals, the Pell Owl, those many, many beautiful birds, the call of the Fish Eagle the croaking frogs, the cheeping crickets, the honking hippos and the night calls of the lion and the hyeana. That wonderful night sky and the noise of the night.

Lower Zambezi National Park

Lower Zambezi National Park, in the south central part of Zambia, lies on the banks of the Zambezi River some way down stream from Kariba Dam and well below the Victoria Falls. The river is more than a mile wide at places and the current is generally languid as the river makes its way gradually towards Mozambique. Read more?
