There's something about the combination of Sausage Trees, yurts and the striking views of the mighty Zambezi River which make for a rather interesting place. If arriving by boat, the first view of Sausage Tree is of the great canopied white rooves of the lodge which are in stark contrast to the earthy tones of the bush behind.
Sausage is one of a handful of luxury camps and lodges on the Lower Zambezi and has a reputation for excellent service, great wildlife and lashings of pampering. Game drives and night drives are on offer to explore the big game of the interior between the river and the escarpment. The area is rich in bird and animal life and it is a particularly good place to see leopard. Walking, too, is very rewarding. For the safari-weary, the river is as good a place as any to unwind, either on a sunset cruise, fishing for tiger and bream or coasting through the shallows in a canoe to see the bush from a different angle. If you really can't tear yourself away from your airy tented room, there is a range of therapeutic treatments on offer to aid your total relaxation.
Sausage Tree have gone all out to ensure that a stay is memorable so you can expect the odd surprise lunch and breakfast location or lovely sundowner spot. The meals are tasty and interesting and often surprising, given the logistics of getting supplies in and out.
If you are looking for a particularly private get-away, the Kigelia House is a beautiful and self-contained suite where private dining can be arranged along with your own guide and vehicle.
Sausage makes a good final destination on a safari but don't make it a rushed stop. There's so much to do that a good 3-4 nights will be needed to make the most of it. For a more rustic experience, have a look at Ol Mondoro. Other less formal but just as comfortable options include Kulefu and Chongwe River Camp.
