A relaxing "country club" style small hotel within easy reach of Vic Falls, but also a destination in itself, with plenty of activities on offer

The River Club is a slightly incongruous mixture of croquet lawns and pavilion-like summer-houses alongside reed and thatch rooms overlooking a broad swath of the Zambezi. Artefacts and old photos collected by owner Peter Jones give an indication of some of the areas’ interesting and slightly random history. For example, the River Club has helped to host a boat race on the course used during the Professional Sculling Championships that were held on the Zambezi in 1910 and in which several Oxford and Cambridge and Olympic rowers have taken part over more recent years. Photos of these events line the walls.

The River Club occupies a good location on a lovely stretch of river and is ideal if you like the thought of a bit of downtime in addition to exploring Livingstone and the Falls. The lodge itself offers boat cruises and there is also a spa and a mini-gym with a treadmill and stationary bike. The rooms are largely open-fronted but with insect screens that can be drawn across (important in the rainy season).

This is a good location if you envisage having some time on your hands to relax and enjoy the lovely pool and gardens. It is a slightly quirky place – not entirely what you would expect in Africa, but charming despite its eccentricities.

Victoria Falls - Livingstone

Livingstone is the little town from which visitors to Zambia can visit the Victoria Falls, relax on the Zambezi or indulge in the multitude of crazy adrenalin activities available.  Unlike Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwea which is within easy walking distance of the Falls, Livingstone is about 6km from the Falls itself and you need to get in a car to get there.  Whether the Falls is best viewed from Zambia or Zimbabwe is a rather subjective issue and depends on who you talk to and the time of year.  From Zambia, you look along the gorge and the area of the Falls immediately in front of the Zambian view points can dry up at certain times of the year.  Both countries suffer when the river is in spate as you see an awful lot of spray and not much of the falls themselves...you also get a free shower.
