South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

A year-round comfy lodge where you can both relax or get out and about

Kafunta River Lodge is one of just two camps owned and operated by Ron and Anke Cowan in the South Luangwa.  A permanent lodge rather than a bushcamp, Kafunta occupies a lovely spot on the river from which you can enjoy the view, passing wildlife and resident birds.  In fact, Kafunta is probably well suited to people who would like to forego the odd game drive in favour of some r&r by the pool or natural hot spring jacuzzi (complete with river view).

That's not to say that there is not plenty to keep the energetic properly occupied.  Morning and evening game drives with the odd sundowner or bush brunch will keep you busy, and there is also the chance to enjoy the odd walk.

Kafunta is one of the few lodges to remain open all year round and is built for comfort so even if you visit during the green season, the odd rain-storm won't be too much of a bother.  Kafunta is also a good option for families as the lodge provides a safe and friendly environment for children.

South Luangwa National Park

The Luangwa Valley is probably Zambia's best known wildlife area. As well as having very good all-round game, Luangwa is somewhere that has gained a well deserved reputation for walking safaris, though there is a great deal more to do above and beyond. The park consists of large amounts of woodland; miombo interspersed with grass lands in the north of the park and large stands of mature ebony forming deep shade along the banks of the river.
