Game drives, night drives and walking safaris.

Kapani is one of the oldest lodges in the Luangwa, started in 1986 by Norman Carr - the pioneer of walking safaris and conservation in this area. Lying just outside the national park, it overlooks the Luangwa River, and from its expansive deck, you can take in the comings and goings of the wildlife along the banks.

Eight brick and thatch rooms and two lagoon houses make up the camp, and are all elegantly decorated and very comfortable. The normal rooms are adjoining and so there is slightly less privacy than newer lodges, but on the upside, this arrangement, together with the large swimming pool is ideal for families and children.

A night or two at Kapani at the beginning of the trip is definitely worth considering.  The game around the main entrance to the Luangwa National Park is prolific and habituated to vehicles.  However, it can be quite busy in this area and you would want to get out to the peace and quiet of Norman Carr's fabulous bushcamps after one or two nights acclimatising.  The bushcamps range from the rustic (Luwi) to the luxurious (Mchenja) and a couple in-between (Nsolo and Kakuli) so there really is something for everyone.

The general atmosphere of the Norman Carr Safaris camps is lovely and relaxed. Everything works well and the staff are great with many of the scouts having been with Norman Carr in the old days. The guides are all superb and very interactive with their walks and particularly good with children.

South Luangwa National Park

The Luangwa Valley is probably Zambia's best known wildlife area. As well as having very good all-round game, Luangwa is somewhere that has gained a well deserved reputation for walking safaris, though there is a great deal more to do above and beyond. The park consists of large amounts of woodland; miombo interspersed with grass lands in the north of the park and large stands of mature ebony forming deep shade along the banks of the river.
