Solely a walking camp - simple and rustic, close to nature. A great start for a longer walking safari combining a couple of different camps.

Luwi is one of those camps that attracts adjectives like a magnet - rustic, unpretentious, bucolic.  In truth, its simplicity needs no embellishment.  What you will find here is a place to lay your head where you can be surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of the African bush without the fanfare and fuss.

Norman Carr, father of walking safaris in Zambia, identified the site for Luwi in the 1980s, choosing a site well away from the Luangwa River.  Cunningly, though, the camp is located near to a permanent lagoon which is home to crocs and hippo and enjoys frequent visitations from elephant, buffalo, impala and puku among others.  The remote location of the camp means that there are few roads and the area is free for walkers to explore without the disappointment of hearing vehicles and walking along jeep-tracks.

A seasonal camp, re-built every year after the rains, Luwi's four thatched reed rooms lie under towering mahogany trees.  Despite its simplicity and wildness, you can still be assured of a hot shower, flush loo and tasty home-cooked meals prepared by the camp's fun and friendly team.

Luwi is often incorporated in walking safaris between Nsolo Bushcamp, Kakuli Bushcamp and Mchenja Bushcamp or taken as a remote retreat after a game-rich experience in the Mfuwe area of the Park.  For those that want the ultimate in bush luxury, consider a Luwi Riverbed Sleepout under the stars.

South Luangwa National Park

The Luangwa Valley is probably Zambia's best known wildlife area. As well as having very good all-round game, Luangwa is somewhere that has gained a well deserved reputation for walking safaris, though there is a great deal more to do above and beyond. The park consists of large amounts of woodland; miombo interspersed with grass lands in the north of the park and large stands of mature ebony forming deep shade along the banks of the river.
