Mfuwe occupies a good central location within the park. Game-wise, the area is one of the best and the lodge is well situated on a tree-backed flood plain which can be flooded or dry but always attracts a good amount of interesting animals which you can enjoy from the wide deck. The lodge also benefits from being only 45mins from Mfuwe Airport so can make a great entree or last course on your Luangwa journey.
The lodge has a new look this year after a recent refurb of its interiors. The thatched chalets have retained their “safari" charm but the interiors now boast the style, comfort and function of a first class hotel.
The lodge is the largest in the Valley (at 18 rooms) and as such, you can’t expect the same intimacy and low-key feel of some of the other camps in the area. Every effort has been made to create and involving experience where there should be pretty much something for everyone. Game drives into the surrounding area seem to be very rewarding with a high chance of seeing leopard, lion and elephant among a whole range of herbivores and some fantastic birds. Back at the lodge, there is plenty of lounge space and also a “safari" spa in a stunning location.
The lodge does not rest on its stylish laurels; different themes for brunch and dinner make the dining experience far from ordinary (from pizza ovens to bush breakfasts).
If you are looking to acclimatise and relax after a long journey or roughing it in the bush, or simply to make the most out of the big game experience, this may be precisely what you are looking for. However, do be warned that you will see other vehicles out and about and may share a sighting with upto four other cars. The Mfuwe area can be a hive of activity and most vehicles coming into the Park will pass by the area of the lodge.
It is also worth noting that Mfuwe is one of only a few South Luangwa camps that remains open for most of the year so it is a good option for those looking at visiting in green season.
