Bulawayo is the main town in the southern part of Zimbabwe and the capital of Matabeleland, where the majority of people are from the Ndebele (or Matabele) tribe. Its roots lie in the northern advance of the Matabele king, Mzilikazi (a breakaway nation of the Zulus) in the 1840s and the subsequent conquest of the town by the forces of Sir Cecil John Rhodes and the British South Africa Company. These two powerful histories are evident in the town and its surrounds.

Bulawayo in itself is a relatively sleepy town with some interesting architecture and streets that were made for ox-carts to do nifty u-turns. For those with an interest in culture and history, it is well worth allowing a day in Bulawayo. The Bulawayo Club is a great place to stay...living history in itself, and there are a number of historical tours that can be arranged around or near the City. The Natural History Museum is also impressive with a huge collection of exhibits from wildlife to colonial and indigenous history.

Bulawayo has an international airport with regular flights to Johannesburg. It can be a convenient start or end point for safaris that include {Matobo Hills National Park} (only 40 km away), Hwange National Park, Gonarezhou National Park, the Great Zimbabwe ruins and Victoria Falls.
