The Nyanga and Juliasdale area of the Eastern Highlands were once a hive of activity and popular weekend and holiday destination for Zimbabwean and visitors alike. At a time when big hotels where the places to stay if you were well-heeled, the Rhodes-Inyanga, Montclair and Troutbeck were the most popular. These are a bit dated now and have suffered in recent times, but are becoming more popular again, mostly with Zim families during school holidays. However, fortunately, there is an option for those that appreciate slightly more intimate experiences and like to avoid that last “ResortÇ??.
Inn on the Rupurara is one of a collection of “InnsÇ?? that operate throughout Zimbabwe, mostly in non-safari areas where the interest lies elsewhere. Inn on the Rupurara is relatively small at 18 rooms, charmingly styled in a sort of quite formal but friendly English kind of way. The Inn actually does command a lovely view over its small conservancy where you can go on a bit of a game drive, climb a rather tantalising rock kopje or go for walks.
Wildlife is not really the focus here and it is rather to nature-lovers or birders that the Inn might appeal. Families especially might enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a place where you don’t have to do 4 hour game drives commencing at 5.30am to feel you’re getting value for your bucks.
The Inn is a good stopover for a 2-3 nights as part of a tour down the Eastern Highlands. Unless you are driving yourself or part of an organised trip, you’ll find it difficult to get out and about to other areas of interest around here (such as climbing Inyangani, the highest mountain in Zim or visiting the Pungwe Falls). However, it is probably the best option for good value and standard of accommodation in this area where you can avoid the big hotels.
Accommodation is on a bed & breakfast basis and does not include drinks or activities.
