Why choose a small beach lodge over a big hotel?
We feel that smaller lodges and hotels leave you with much more opportunity to experience life beyond the walls of your room and so we tend to avoid the "resort" style hotels. Frankly, one air-conditioned room is just the same wherever you go. The smaller lodges tend to treat you like a person rather than a room number. They offer opportunities to escape the crowds and take you to places where you can feel like you are in a different continent (as opposed to surrounded day and night by hordes of your country-folk).
To us, beaches are not just places that you retire to when you are so burnt-out you are no longer capable of anything more than lying prone for days on a sunbed. Africa's coastline is as varied and fascinating as the interior and should be accorded due attention. There is plenty of relaxation on offer but if you look a little further, you'll also find adventure, stunning scenery, fascinating history and some of the friendliest, liveliest people you are every likely to come across.
Coastal areas are sensitive eco-systems where big hotels can have huge impacts. Not all are bad but smaller lodges just tend to be a bit easier on the earth. The opportunity to explore local culture without over-powering it is also much easier if you are not one of 400 guests.
