FAQs
What about security in Zimbabwe?
Firstly, a note on the political situation, because it obviously can’t be ignored; Zimbabwe has indeed been through some troubled times and now has a Government of National Unity which has brought stability, if not a final resolution, to the country’s recent turbulent years. The dollarization of the economy at the beginning of 2009 initiated an on-the-spot recovery of the economy and investment is now flowing back in to revive old operations and start new endeavours. International and local companies are displaying their optimism by investing significantly in Zimbabwe.
This is not to say that things are completely rosy and there are still a few hurdles to cross. Life in Zimbabwe remains hard for the average man on the street as food is relatively expensive, but the recovery of businesses and the return of tourism to the country will do a great deal to improve the lives of the wider population.
As a tourist here, you are likely to be given a very warm welcome and (unless the situation changes dramatically) you are less likely to experience trouble here than in most other African countries. Security is generally good and crime is on a petty, opportunistic level which should not affect you if you don’t tout your belongings or do something silly. The atmosphere is relaxed and travelling around the country, although sometimes logistically tricky, is safe and enjoyable. Our consultant, Amanda Mitchell, moved to Harare at the end of 2009 and so is in the best possible position to keep you informed about what is happening on the ground.
