Kerala Backwaters accommodation - Coconut Lagoon
Coconut Lagoon sits on the shores of Vembanad Lake in the heart of the Keralan Backwaters. It seems fitting that the only way to arrive here is by boat.
It’s only a 10 minute transfer but it is long enough to transport you to a haven of tranquility. Traditional Keralan tharavads of local wood, some dating back to the 1700s, have been carefully reassembled according to ancient carpentry principles in an abandoned coconut plantation. The heritage bungalows, duplex mansions and villas with private pool are set among manicured lawns, coconut trees, hibiscus and orchids, some with lake views. Inside, the emphasis is on providing an authentic Keralan feel so the rooms are uncluttered and furnished with teak and cane, cotton and other natural fabrics. The ensuite bathrooms are open to the skies above. There are no televisions and at night it’s very, very still and quiet.
The hotel is managed with care of the environment in mind – you can check out the recycling centre and farm yourself. The staff is absolutely lovely – their smiles are completely genuine - and will happily show you the butterfly garden, take you bird watching or for a stroll to nearby villages. The two restaurants offer continental and Indian choices but the south Indian dishes are the best – real authentic local cuisine. If you’re prepared to rise early you can watch Kalarippayattu, an ancient martial art, being practiced at 6am before a south Indian breakfast or exotic fresh fruits and an endless supply of tea and coffee with views of the lake.
