Watamu
Watamu lies just south of Malindi on the north coast of Kenya and is comprised mainly of Turtle Bay and Blue Lagoon. Both have crystal blue water and white sandy beaches with a protective reef that makes for a warm, calm sea. Read more?
Each bay is dotted with coral outcrops (the shape of one having bestowed Turtle Bay with its' name) and for a long time, the coastline was occupied by very few hotels. There are a lot of private houses, mainly owned by white Kenyans, and this helps keep the beaches uncrowded and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly.
Interest in the area has increased in the last few years and so there are more visitors here now, primarily British and Italian, and a few more loiterers on the beach trying to sell kikois or snorkelling trips. Aside from the beach, there is also the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek, a prime spot for bird enthusiasts and the Gedi Ruins nearby.
Watamu is however, primarily a beach resort destination and while accommodation options vary in quality of experience, it is particularly nice for families or people that want a low-hassle beach stay in a comfortable hotel.
