Baringo and Bogoria

Baringo is a fresh water lake in a harsh dry rock strewn landscape where it's hard to say what the inhabitants of this area manage to survive on. Much of the ground vegetation has been decimated by the herds of goats, leaving it bare and vulnerable to erosion. Read more?

There is a stark beauty about the rocky escarpments that surround Baringo and the lake itself is beautiful too. There are a number of small islands reached by motor boat from the mainland, and these are the main attraction for visitors to the area. Two of the islands have accommodation from which you can water-ski, birdwatch and fish. Baringo is a bit of an outpost and not very developed as far as tourism is concerned, but it has great potential for the more adventurous who want to stray from the beaten track.

Another important flamingo refuge, Lake Bogoria lies between Baringo and Nakuru and is a park that only really appears on itineraries as an optional extra to a visit to either of the other two lakes. It's a small park and accommodation options are limited to a choice of one slightly unremarkable lodge.

The reserve has a bit of a neglected air and since there is scarce grazing, not many animals. However bird-life is good here, particularly for waders, if you have the opportunity to explore and the fig forest at the eastern end is unusual and feels like a bit of a lost world (watch out for the sandwich-pinching baboons here, though). There are a number of hot springs on the edge of Bogoria, one of which is still a favourite with some of the canny Nairobi residents who sometimes end up soaking in the warm water with a cold Tusker beer at the end of a safari. Whether or not this is strictly allowed, no one seems to object.
