Kenya Coast South

Mombasa itself, the largest town on the Kenya coast, is unlikely to be somewhere you'll want to dawdle but there is a fair chance you might transit through it enroute to the quieter beaches of the south Coast. Read more?

Tiwi, Diani & Galu whilst almost contiguous, have each created their own individual character with Diani definitely being the busiest, although in amongst the throbbing international resorts some wonderful small villas and boutique hotels gamely survive, oblivious to their neighbours but taking full advantage of the facilities and opportunities available in the area.

Diani Beach needs no introduction. Broad swathes of perfect sand that stretch for miles from Tiwi in the north to Galu in the south.

Galu Beach lies at the southern end of Diani Beach on Kenya south coast, tranquil by comparison with considerably less action. A great mix of endless white beaches interspersed with stunning rock pools teeming with life, Galu beach has earned a reputation as a Kenyan "Maldives".

This is classified as a ‘Kaya’ area (protected by the National Museum) due to its surrounding holy forests and sacred land to which access is available for those who can tear themselves away from the waters edge to walk or bike through the network of trails that link the numerous small villages and homesteads.

Farther south still, the seemingly endless sandy beaches give way to paler but quieter imitations, wrestling for attention with the idyllic tiny islands offshore. Shimoni, with its rich history (and fabulous fishing) has long been a favourite as are the areas around Funzi & Chale despite the area changing character with the spreading mangrove swamps down to and beyond the Tanzania border.
