Climate details - Tanzania spans about 10 degrees of latitude and ranges from sea level at the coast to over 19,000 ft at the top of Kilimanjaro, so a discussion of the country's weather as a whole is rather meaningless. For more in-depth information on each area have a look at the climate and seasons for each park on the right hand navigation menu.

In general terms the Tanzania climate is governed by the Inter tropical Convergence Zone, the area where northeast and southeast trade winds meet creating an area of low pressure. The ITCZ is centred around the equator, spanning roughly 5 degrees of latitude north and south, but moves north an south throughout the year.

In simplistic terms the ITCZ moves up and down like a large hoover, sucking moisture up from the oceans and dropping it onto the land. In Tanzania there are two rainy seasons, a short one, the northeast monsoon "Kaskazi" between October and February when the ITCZ is moving south and a longer one the southeast Monsoon "Kusi" when the ITCZ moves north having soaked up large amounts of moisture in the southern oceans.
