Mobile Tented Camps allow you to find the migration as it moves throughout the Serengeti. The migration is ultimately driven by the weather and can therefore be very unpredictable, with timings moving by as much as several weeks in extreme (wet or dry) years. This, combined with the fact that many of the areas the herds visit are beyond the reach of any permanent camps (like the Mara River where the wildebeest spend much of the time between August and October) means that a mobile camp offers one of the best ways to catch up with the herds.(For greater detail on the migration see The Wildebeest Migration)
The mobile camps are better able to react to what is happening with the weather and move to be in touch with the game. We also think it's well worth while spending time in a couple of locations within the Serengeti (or Serengeti and Loliondo), as a way of maximizing your chances of seeing the migration, and seeing two very different areas. Mobile camps make this possible. In Northern Tanzania we use two different types of mobile camp in the migration:
Seasonal Mobility these camps move seasonally, so as to be in the best location for the migration, throughout the year. They're shared luxury tented camps which cater for a maximum of 8 people at a time. You have a private vehicle and guide as standard. See Nomad's Serengeti Safari Camp and Loliondo Safari Camp. |
Full Mobility These camps are booked exclusively and allow you to have a totally private safari, moving across the Serengeti and surrounding areas at your own pace. These are superb for families or anyone wanting to be totally alone. See Serengeti Wilderness Mobile. |
