| Northern Tanzania is the best known part of the country. This is for a number of good reasons. Firstly it's easily accessed; secondly it's probably one of the richest game areas in the world containing an extraordinary array of world renowned game parks and a significant percentage of Africa's last really wild large mammals. Thirdly it contains some of the most stunning scenery imaginable - from the continent's highest peak, Mt Kilimanjaro, to the vast plains of the southern Serengeti. The parks are located fairly close together so that it makes a great deal of sense to visit them together in a driving safari based from Arusha (the beginning point for most safaris in Northern Tanzania). Despite the number of visitors to northern Tanzania it's still eminently possible to get off the beaten track. Serengeti National Park. Scene of the spectacular wildebeest migration. The extensive Serengeti ecosystem and main park are home to unrivalled concentrations of plains game, predators and over 500 species of birds. Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands. The Ngorongoro Highlands lie on the edge of the Great Rift Valley forming the eastern boundary of the Serengeti. The Ngorongoro crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world, is one of the natural wonders of the world and one of the places where you have the best chance of seeing the big five. Lake Manyara National Park. Just south of the Ngorongoro highlands on a thin strip of land forming part of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Evergreen forest, escarpment, acacia woodland and lake shore are home to a phenomenal diversity of wildlife. Tarangire National Park. To the south Lake Manyara adjoining the large open plains of maasailand, this surprisingly little-known park has fantastic concentrations of game in the dry season as well as some of the best walking opportunities in Northern Tanzania. Lake Natron. This stunning soda lake is the only regular breeding area for Lesser Flamingos in east Africa, used by about two and a half million birds. Remote, arid and dramatic. Lake Eyasi. Home to the last hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, this soda lake in one of the oldest parts of the Eastern Rift is bordered by a three thousand foot escarpment wall to the West. A beautiful place for walking safaris.
