Between December and March, Northern Tanzania is arguably at its best for a safari. If you're looking for a safari this winter, with large concentrations of wildlife, but want to leave the crowds behind, think about making the lesser known areas of northern Tanzania the focus of your safari. Why? Because as well as the main national parks like Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands, the much lesser known, peripheral areas, like Loliondo and even the dramatically remote areas at the northern end of the Tanzania Rift Valley like Lake Natron become filled with game during the (northern hemisphere) winter. And why are these areas so good? Because these remote areas are places where most tourists don't get to visit (they belong to remote Maasai communities who allow only a few responsible operators use them) and these are places where we can offer you not only superb game driving, but also walking safaris (anything from a short walk from camp up to a fully supported walking safari over many days) and night drives.
Safaris to other parts of Tanzania. Many people ignore the lesser known parks at this time of year; the received wisdom says that once there's enough water, the game simply disperses and that once things green up, animals are harder to see. The truth is that this can be a superb time to get to parks like Ruaha National Park, the Selous Game Reserve and Katavi National Park. The contrast with the dry season is extreme, animal behaviour changes significantly (predators have a harder time) and you'll probably find that there's be few other visitors. Think about mixing a few days at one of these remoter parks with a major game “hit” in the Serengeti.
