Amaan Kendwa, Zanzibar. Battery hotel on Kendwa beach for budget-conscious tourists who care little for style, and less for privacy, with 62 rooms squeezed onto plot that extends uphill from the beach.

Rooms range from terraced cottages of air-conditioned doubles on the beachfront, to a three storey block of 20 some way back - all very cheap and nastily furnished, though clean and well kept. Unfortunately, two or three large timber thatched bars have been built on the beach itself, which spoils the views and otherwise fabulous natural beauty of Kendwa: the Amaan Kendwa's bar/restaurant is the biggest offender of them all, but with any luck a big spring tide will sweep it away. For budget hotels with more style and soul try Kendwa Rocks , Evergreen Bungalows
