Chada Katavi accommodation. A stylishly understated camp

After much deliberation by it's owners, who were concerned about losing Chada's unique character, the camp has recently had a substantial upgrade. The result is a stylish, comfortable, and well designed camp. The six very spacious campaign tents are immaculate khaki canvas with leather and brass fittings. Each one is placed in the shade of a large tree (the camp sits in a grove of acacia and tamarinds) with views out onto Chada plain.

Tents At Chada - in side the tents, you want for nothing.

The beds, with head-boards made of suede and wood, wouldn't look out of place in the smartest of hotels. There's a writing desk, and leather hanging shelves for you to put your clothes in. There are acres of space and one of the best features is the fact that the tents are designed so that instead of the door being on the short side (under the apex of the roof), the whole long side of the tent opens up. In the middle of the day you can loll idly on your bed, reading, occasionally checking for action outside, and making the most of the breeze. If you choose to keep the tent zipped up (and of course at night), you still have the view as the tents have wrap-around mosquito net windows for a 360 degree view (you can close them so no one can see in).

The bathrooms - A private bathroom sits a short distance behind each tent.

Here the set up is traditional safari style - a bucket shower, filled on demand, provides 20 litres of piping hot water, or of course cold if you prefer in the middle of the day. Because of the high water table on Chada Plain the loos are wooden seats over a hole rather than flush lavatories. This was an ecologocally sound choice, not a short cut, so if you have to have a flush loo, then this camp probably isnt for you.

Dining at Chada - Chada Camp has a central dining tent in a clearing under the trees.

It's a simple affair with a long dining table, so everyone tends to eat together. Food is really good here, and as with many of these really small bush camps you should make a point of visiting the kitchen before you go, not just to meet the great characters who are producing the food (which is worth the visit) but also because you wont believe what can be produced on such basic equipment. In the safari world this may be a cliché, but it's true!
