Emerson's and Green is set in the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town - over the years it's built a reputation as one of the more stylish places to stay.

It was built in the 19th century as the private home of a wealthy swahili merchant and it's size was clearly an expression of, amongst other things, his own financial clout - it was and still is the second tallest building in the stone town and only tolerated by the Sultan because his house was taller. The views from the top are a 360 panorama of the stone town and to the west over the sea.

Nowadays this is a small, privately owned hotel with a great sense of style. It's highly unusual and elaborately decorated with extensive use of Zanzibari antiques. All of this contributes to an appealing theatrical feeling that compliments the Stone Town's sense of history. There are Hotels in Zanzibar which offer a much more anodyne version of luxury, so if you'd rather not deal with the idiosyncrasies that go with this sort of place you may prefer Serena Inn, but if you feel like something a little unusual then you should give Emerson's a go.

Because this used to be a private 19th century home there's none of the prefabricated feel that pervades many hotels; the 10 rooms are different shapes and sizes and are individually designed and decorated. Many of them have large and elaborate baths and balconies with intricate lattice so you can see out but still feel relatively private within.

The other great attraction at Emerson's is the roof top restaurant, where you eat out in what must be one of the most unusual settings of any restaurant - from high up above the Stone Town you can watch the sun setting over the Indian ocean surrounded by the sights sounds and smells of Zanzibar and later under the light of the stars . One of our clients (who loved it) summed up the experience by saying that the restaurant is “...a surprise which is best left unexplained ...” Go for the experience, not the quality of the food.
