The rooms at Fumba are set well apart from each other - easy as it's a big plot and there are only 26 rooms altogether.

They are also large, airy and tastefully furnished, with air-conditioning and fans, though not top-end luxurious.

A real plus point for the suites is that each has its own rooftop terrace, where we're told private meals can be served on request - great for those of a retiring disposition when the hotel's full and the other 50 guests are at the trough in the dining room.

Also noteworthy are the fantasy outside baths set in the roots of huge baobabs on the deck of the Baobab Suites; in the tropical temperatures of Zanzibar, plunge pools may have been more useful, but it's a fun touch.

There's also a large, not especially luxurious, but nicely positioned pool overlooking the ocean, with a wide terrace and pleasantly natural surroundings.
