Greystoke Camp, the original camp in Mahale and the best location for a chimpanzee safari, has one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations of any lodge in East Africa, sitting on a white sandy beach at the base of the 8000 ft Mahale Mountains overlooking the turquoise waters of Lake Tanganyika. Greystoke was built by Roland and Zoe Purcell and is the place to stay for a Chimpanzee safari but it also offers so much more. Over the last few years we've been lucky enough to spend a great deal of time at Mahale in all seasons and it has never lost its magical feeling. Rounding Kangwena bay by dhow in the twilight, to see the the Greystoke Mess lit up with kerosene lanterns is something it takes a while to tire of (particularly when you've been plied with drinks on the dhow on your journey from the airstrip)
The camp has recently been completely redesigned and all structures are built of biodegradable materials; the whole place was rebuilt using recycled wood from wrecked and rotting dhows recovered from the shore of Lake Tanganyika. As well as being the best place to see chimpanzee, Greystoke has always had a reputation for style. Never more so than now; with its Swiss Family Robinson style ingenuity and the unbridled artistic flair of the designer (Ben Jackson), this is an inspired feat of creativity. It's also great fun to stay here - the rooms, with their open air roof decks and ladders made from old dugout canoes, inspire a sense of excitement that you probably last felt as a child, playing in a tree house. Meals are served either in the main mess, set on the beach no more than 50 yards from the waters edge, or in the open air under the stars at night by the waters edge. The design of the camp and its extraordinary location, as well as the charm and warmth of the Tongwe mean that Greystoke is suffused with a seductive natural opulence and you want for absolutely nothing. Ultimately, Greystoke Camp is as much of an experience as the chimpanzee safari. In June 2003, The Daily Telegraph's foreign editor, Alec Russell, stayed at Greystoke and Chada Camps with Natural High. You can read about his safari and our involvement in it at www.telegraph.co.ukGreystoke Camp Guide price from: US$350-550 per person per night. (explain this?) As prices at some camps can vary substantially between high and low season, these are rough figures to give you an indication of costs. They are based on per person per night, sharing twin accommodation. For more information, please contact us and we'll be happy to give you an accurate quote based on your time of travel.
