Chimpanzee safaris from Greystoke, Mahale. Mahale is probably the best place in Africa to see wild Chimpanzees and Greystoke was the pioneer at Mahale. They were the ones who came here when no one else did, in the days when it used to take a full day by boat to get here from Kigoma, so they know about doing things properly.Greystoke organises chimpanzee safaris into the forest at Mahale, lead by local rangers whose knowledge of the area and chimps is unrivalled.Moshi, one of the guides, has worked with the Mahale chimps for over 25 years, so he knows them better than anyone. In the forest he recognizes individuals easily as he originally worked for the Japanese researchers.![]() Chimpanzee trekking happens in the mornings at Mahale, guests leaving Greystoke either on foot or by boat, depending on the location of the animals.Usually Moshi goes ahead at dawn to see where the animals have spent the night, then guides the guests lead by another camp guide, to where they are. This way you avoid too much in the way of a wild goose chase. The length of walk can vary greatly and there is no guarantee of finding the chimps. They're incredibly mobile and can cover thousands of feet vertically in the Mahale mountains in the space it takes us to cover a couple of miles. But the guides are conscientious and, if possible, will continue until they find them or until everybody has had enough. Walks from Greystoke can vary from as much as 7 hours one day to find chimps, to as little as ½ an hour from camp the next. And when you're tired of chimpanzee trekking...Greystoke has a forty-foot hardwood dhow, built on the lake, and this is used to great effect. When you've had enough of chimpanzees and chimp trekking, you can take gentle sails in the evenings, snorkelling to look at the brightly coloured endemic cychlids or just enjoying the breathtaking scenery.Greystoke Camp home page
