 Kifaru lodge is set high up in the farmland outside Karatu on the edge of the forest reserve, it's a forty minute drive from Lake Manyara National Park and about an hour and three quarter from the Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands. This is a very low key and small lodge, but it has a friendly and intimate feel and it's a place we have always very much enjoyed. The rooms are not large and they are very simply decorated, but they are comfortable and many have a fireplace and small ensuite bathroom. Accommodation is divided up into three separate houses and there is a central dining room where everybody eats together. The lodge takes a maximum of 20 guests at a time. There are great views to the southeast over the Mbulu highlands to the edge of the Manyara rift wall.  Being so high up (almost 7500 ft) at certain times of the year, mainly July and August, Kifaru can be stuck in cloud for much of the morning, but this is no doubt one of the reasons the extensive gardens are so fertile. Fruit and vegetables and other produce from the farm, of which this is a part, supply not only the kitchen of the lodge, but that of many other hotels in the region. This is a good place to spend a night between Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro and like many of the other camps in Karatu there are some great walks to be had in the local area which can provide a welcome change to rattling around in a Landover for hours on end.
