On the northeastern coast of Zanzibar island built on top of a coral ledge overlooking the Indian Ocean towards Mnemba Island. The name is rather misleading - Matemwe is in fact an ecosenstive, low key lodge. It's small, with a great location and has a very relaxed feel, ideal for those wanting to spend a few days soaking up the Zanzibari pace of life.

One of the first lodges to be built on the East Coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe has evolved into a very comfortable 12 room hotel with pretty grounds. Nowadays, after an upgrade in early 2005 all the rooms are the equivalent of suites with ensuite bathrooms, verandahs set literally right on the waters edge, overlooking the Indian Ocean and enormous beds beautifully made out of coconut palm wood.

Right from the start Matemwe has struck a perfect balance between beach-style simplicity and elegance, and the new rooms more than ever reflect the creative flair of the designer. The older rooms are a little less spacious but all have magnificent views out to sea. The main dining area with its stunning outlook is intimate and totally laid back. The food is good without being ambitious with lots of fresh seafood on offer.

Matemwe is built and operated on the ethos of low impact ecotourism - wherever possible working with local fishing communities and minimising impact of any kind to the environment. This attitude is reflected in all elements of the hotel, and it is great to see that expansion, rife elsewhere on the island, has been largely resisted.
