Ndutu Lodge was one of the first camps to be built in the Serengeti. It's located in beautiful mature acacia woodland on the southern shore of Lake Ndutu on the border of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Ndutu Lodge is a good example of a small, privately owned lodge. It is simple and unpretentious, with the stone built cottages all set quite close together, but the camp has a friendly and intimate feel that and everything works well. The managers, Paul and Louise, and their crew put a great deal of energy into making everyone feel comfortable, even when the camp is full at the busiest times of year, and the high number of repeat bookings bears testament to this.

The lodge has thirty twin or double cottages, made of stone with thatched rooves. The mess building is also thatched with stone sides and open front which looks out onto a bird table that gets covered each morning by flocks of love birds. All the cottages at Ndutu are strung out in a line either side of the mess building. The rooms, which aren't huge, feel quite spartan at first, with simple decoration and basic furnishings. However, this simplicity belies the true nature of the place. The camp has great character and charisma and all the bits that really matter, like comfortable beds and hot water, are there. After the fashionable excesses of some of the luxury lodges it's really nice to see that Ndutu hasn't been tempted to follow suit and has retained much of its original charm.

The area around Ndutu Lodge is the scene of the wildebeest calving, which happens in February or March each year. At this time many hundreds of thousands of animals, having made their way south through the Serengeti, all give birth in a very short space of time, and Ndutu woodland and the surrounding plains are the focus. This is without doubt one of the most spectacular events you can see in East Africa, and even though these days it can be quite busy in Ndutu woodland there are many, many miles of vast open short-grass plains so you can actually drive for hours at a time without seeing anyone.

Ndutu tends to get slightly overlooked for the rest of the year, but there is some excellent resident game and great birding throughout the year and at any but the busiest times you have huge spaces to your self to explore. During the dry season you are very likely to have this place to your self and the area has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere with no noisy wildbeest shattering the peace. You need to work a bit harder for your game, but there is plenty around.
