Ngorongoro Crater Lodge - safari activities

The main focus of a safari at Ngorongoro is naturally the Ngorongoro Crater. As well as being able to sit on your veranda at Crater Lodge, watching the wildlife far below you, this is an excellent base from which to see the crater up close. The descent road is a short drive away and you can easily get onto the Crater floor good and early if you put your mind to it. Often overlooked, but to my mind just as beautiful are the other peaks in the Ngorongoro highlands, and Crater Lodge is a good base from which to explore some of this dramatic area on foot

We usually recommend that you travel with your own private safari vehicle and guide so that you retain full independence on safari and plan your game viewing to suit your self. (You can stay at Crater Lodge using their own shared vehicles, but although the guides are good, you lack the independence which in our experience can make a safari). Often an evening walk can be the perfect compliment to half a day game drive (these days 6 hours is the maximum amount of time allowed in the Ngorongoro Crater). Walking is not allowed in the Crater itself, but there are numerous other areas where it is possible to get on foot - wildlife may not be as abundant as in the Crater, but in combination with the stunning scenery this is well worth doing.
