One of the less inspiring lodges in Northern Tanzania, although from the point of view of access to the Crater floor, this is arguably one of the best located of the Ngorongoro lodges as it more or less has its own access road. Large lodge, but comfortable rooms with good views.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, 7,800ft above sea level. The lodge is the only development on this side of the rim, well away from the other lodges, and has virtually its own access road to the Crater - about five minutes away. This place should be viewed basically as a convenient place to stay and access the Crater. It certainly isn't luxury (if that's what you're after see Ngorongoro Crater Lodge) though it is perfectly comfortable. In our opinion it's location on the eastern rim away from other lodges makes it a good choice.

If you aren't sure whether Sopa Lodge is for you, ask yourself how much you mind about the quality of your food. If the answer is "quite a lot" then stay at Serena Lodge. Sopa lodge will suit you fine if the answer is something like "I don't mind if my food tastes awful". Actually that's a bit over the top; just don't expect a culinary extravaganza.

Sopa is a large hotel with 96 comfortable rooms all with ensuite bathrooms (with baths not just showers) and there's central heating for the really cold months. There is a central dining area and a bar where the static from the velour upholstery virtually makes your hair stand on end. So if your main reason for being there is to see the Crater you won't be disappointed with the spectacular views and quick access to the Crater floor.
