| We think River Trees is the best place to stay if you're coming to Arusha. It has the friendly relaxed atmosphere of someone's home (because it is) but still manages to provide good service and home cooked food to a high standard. Being in Usa River, it's within easy reach of the airport (20 minutes as opposed to 40 odd to Arusha itself) and in the daylight has attractive grounds and on a clear day good views of Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru which is no more than a few miles away. It's our first choice as the beginning point for most of our safaris in Northern Tanzania. Most people visiting Northern Tanzania arrive at Kilimanjaro with KLM. The flight lands at around 9pm so an overnight in Arusha is unavoidable. On the positive side this puts you in an ideal place for an early morning start on your first day on safari and at River Trees you can catch up on a good nights sleep. The lodge is very low key, comfortable without being luxury and has some appealing idiosyncrasies. Inside there are old photos, trophy's and bits and pieces which illustrate Martina, the owner's long and fascinating involvement with this part of East Africa. River Trees is also well placed for accessing Arusha National Park and Mt Meru, both of which are all too often sadly overlooked, but a great way to spend a day or so in beautiful country
