Sand Rivers Selous is a first-class small safari lodge offering top quality safaris by vehicle, foot and boat well away from the crowds. Few other lodges can rival the views from Sand Rivers; overlooking the Rufiji River at one of it's widest points in the Selous Game Reserve.

Sand Rivers Selous must have one of the most striking locations of any camp in Tanzania.

It's built at Kibambawe point on the north bank of the Rufiji River, overlooking a mile-wide stretch of languid water, about 10 miles downstream of Stiglers Gorge. Sand Rivers Selous strikes a fine balance between luxury and authenticity, giving guests a proper taste of the wilderness of the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve. The rooms at Sand Rivers Selous are beautifully constructed and comfortably furnished, food is excellent and service is impeccable. When it comes to seeing the wildlife, there are opportunities for everything from game drives in open sided Land Rovers, walking safaris, boat safaris, flycamps or combinations of all the above.

Despite the level of comfort here, Sand Rivers has a serious approach to the wildlife with its roots firmly in the tradition of Selous walking safaris.

The camp was originally built by Richard Bonham who used this area of the Selous Game Reserve for walking safaris throughout the eighties when the area was all but unknown. Today Sand Rivers still prides itself on the quality of its in-house guides who take enormous pleasure in showing you the great variety on offer.

Sand Rivers Selous is somewhere you will be able to get a superb all round experience of the bush, from watching the wildlife from your veranda or in a hide to walking in the bush or fly camping over night.

The lodge is spectacularly placed to offer combinations of game drive, walking and river safaris. And the flexible attitude means that you can pretty much do what you want when you want, so long as it's within park rules. Each evening you'll have a chance to discuss and plan your activities for the following day with your guide.

The scenery in the area of Sand Rivers is diverse, ranging from the riverine forest, sand banks and ravines of the Rufiji River, to open deciduous woodland, flood plains and ox bow lakes.

The camp has a team of highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable Tanzanian guides. Game drives along the vast open river beds of the Sumbene Sand River in the dry season are particularly rewarding and is not uncommon to find large herds of giraffe and other species gathering on the dry rivers in the evening. One of the great specialities of the lodge is fly camping, which is offered to guests for anything from 1 night to 5 or more nights.
