Sand rivers has 8 rooms. All are open fronted and constructed from natural materials; stone walls, polished wooden floors, and roofs thatched with a local, and particularly shaggy palm frond, the doum palm.

At more than 70 sq metres, including the bathroom, the rooms at Sand Rivers are more than adequately sized. The sense of space is enhanced by having a front wide open to the elements - the ultimate picture window, creating a natural panorama.

The view from the bed can be rather like watching a nature film on an extremely wide screen TV; below you hippos wallow on the edge of sand banks in the River, honking contentedly. Bee eaters, kingfishers and paradise flycatchers dart backwards and forwards. From time to time, small herds of animals appear on the river banks; waterbuck, elephant, buffalo, drawn to the lush vegetation that grows on the banks of the Rufiji. The view is accompanied by an almost incessant soundtrack of bird and animal noise; fish eagles, emerald spotted wood doves, ring necked doves, hippos.

When you visit Sand Rivers, you really can't be in a hurry. Take enough time to be able to spend at least one afternoon just sitting and watching things happen from your verandah or the swimming pool. You may not see a lion kill, but you will come away with a real feeling for the density of animal life that thrives in this reserve.

On the practical side of things the rooms are well appointed. The beds are huge, with canopy mosquito nets with coloured linings, stylishly hung from suspended wrought iron frames. There's plenty of space for hanging clothes and unpacking bags. Each room has two large armchairs, so you can sit and make the most of the early morning tea or coffee which is brought to your room. There are a couple of stools, bed side tables and more than enough mirrors. Lighting and electricity is supplied by a generator (which you aren't aware of) and there are power points supplying 240V electircity throughout the day, so you can charge batteries etc in your room. In the bathroom space is still plentiful. Running water is available on demand, the hot heated by solar panels. The lavatory is a standard flush one.

The swimming pool is built on a ledge about 20 feet above the river under a huge baobab tree and at the right time of year there are literally hundreds of weaver birds building their nests right above you. There's something special about lying on your back in warm water, all of wild Africa around you, and this manic construction going on above your head.
