Luxury camp in southern Tarangire. Elephant, lion and leopard all regulars at the camp waterhole. Swala offers immaculate service and excellent food and the chances are you'll see as much from your tent as on your game drive.
If you are after some serious luxury in Tarangire this is definitely the place to go. It's a permanent tented camp that spares no expense for the sake of comfort. It doesn't have the spontaneity of a camp like Oliver's Camp (and if it's the authentic bush camp feel you're after that's where you should go) and feels quite a bit more formal, but service is absolutely without fault and the food is superb. The camp itself also looks a bit bare when you first arrive, but this is probably partly because there's no shortage of game in the area in the dry season. Much of this game can be seen from your tent as there's an artificial water hole to which they pump water, just in front of the camp. Clearly this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the results are pretty spectacular.
While we were there in late August the game in camp was incredible. Elephant drinking at the waterhole our whole stay and one of the best views of leopard we'd ever seen - drinking from the bird bath some 20 metres away during dinner. You really don't need to have to leave the camp.
One of the great advantages of this camp is that you are well away from the majority of people who visit the park. At certain times of the year game may not be as plentiful as on the Tarangire River, other than in the immediate vicinity of camp, but if you like the idea of a really well run camp, where you can relax in great comfort and be surrounded by wonderful bird life with a good chance of seeing elephant, lion and leopard from your tent, then a visit to Swala hits the spot
